What Are the Differences Between R1 Robots?

The Unitree R1 Basic is a compact 127 cm, 35 kg humanoid robot designed as an entry point to humanoid robotics. It features dual 3D LiDAR, depth cameras, and agile motion control, providing a solid platform for education, demonstrations, and basic research in locomotion and perception.

The EDU variants expand on the R1 basic model in that much like the G1 EDU, there is a second computer for use developmnt with either 40 TOPS (Trillion Operations Per Second) for the R1 EDU U1 or 100 TOPS for the EDU U2 to U6.

Why the R1 matters in the humanoid landscape

Unitree Robotics is no stranger to advanced robotic platforms: its previous humanoids, the G1 and H1, launched at higher price point and were some of the first affordable humanoids robots of their size. The R1’s starting price is dramatically lower, with the base model starting at $11,000 USD (including tariffs) / $12,800 CAD.

In doing so, Unitree is betting on cost reduction via injection molded parts while maintaining a high number of degrees of freedom to push humanoids further into accessible research territory. The R1 line continues the trend of integrating large multimodal models: combining visual, audio, and motion data into more affordable platforms. It’s an important step toward more interactive, perceptive robots.
